Corporate sponsorships and partnerships are vital to the success of Opera New Brunswick. The support of corporations throughout the province allows Opera New Brunswick to present the highest quality performances possible.
Opportunity for all New Brunswickers - ONB
Our mandate is opera by New Brunswickers, for all New Brunswickers. That is why we take opera into the schools. Voice, like soccer, is available to children of all economic levels all over the world. Everyone is born with the instrument, free. And opera really is for everyone: opera was the pop music of its day, and it appeals across generations and socio-economic levels, the more so since Pavarotti and the Three Tenors captured the public imagination.
The great Acadian music educator Rosemarie Landry noted recently on national television that of all the classical arts, opera is the one that most appeals to young people. Not surprising, since it incorporates all the other major arts: music, theatre, visual art and dance. For children, live opera opens the door to a whole new perspective on the world: like all great art, it shows them who they could be.
We educate children and the broader community
More than just a show: Touring operatic productions have traveled through the larger cities in the province in recent years. They come, they sing, the leave. But Opera New Brunswick creates a strong educational component for every production we present, in the schools and for the general public. The whole community benefits from a growing knowledge of the art form. No one misses out. No other organization in New Brunswick is doing this in the vocal arts.
We nurture careers of young New Brunswickers
The singers of tomorrow, today: Our Young Artist Recital Series provides young New Brunswick singers with concert experience and exposure all over the province as they develop their careers, right here at home.
We foster audiences across the entire province
We go everywhere In New Brunswick: ONB takes concert operas and recitals on the road all over the province, from Saint John to Grand Falls, from Sackville to Dieppe to Fredericton. 2010 will see the Acadian Peninsula and St Andrews added to the growing list of locations where all New Brunswickers can experience ONB live.
We bring economic benefit to the community
Opera as economic development: The arts are now well-recognized as an essential economic development tool. Richard Florida's landmark research found economic development success over time is highly correlated with the level of creative and artistic people located in the community. Opera NB is the only high-level vocal arts component of the attraction-and-retention strategy for a province that clearly needs both.
Opera does not pay for itself
We need sport facilities in our communities, don't we? Large-scale community facilities always require subsidy; opera companies, like community pools, never run at a profit or break even. Opera loses money everywhere in the world. The Metropolitan Opera is the most successful company in the world, and when they sell out, the ticket sales cover only half the cost of putting on the show. The rest comes from contributions. Opera New Brunswick is no different. If we want our children to have the opportunities that children in larger centres have, we have to contribute to the infrastructure.
